Ketamine-Assisted PsychotherapyMove through stuck patterns with greater clarity, compassion, and possibility.
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a form of Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy that combines safe, legal ketamine treatment and dedicated psychotherapy sessions with a licensed mental health professional. KAP addresses the root causes of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions for positive, safe, and longer lasting clinical outcomes.
I take on the psychotherapy portion of the experience, while Journey Clinical’s medical team supports you on all medical aspects. This includes determining eligibility, developing a custom treatment plan, prescribing the medicine and monitoring outcomes.
Below is more information about KAP to help you determine if it may be a good fit for you.
I offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in partnership with Journey Clinical.
-
Ketamine is a legal, safe and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and PTSD. Ketamine has rapidly-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which is often noticeable within hours and can last for weeks.
It works by targeting the neurotransmitter glutamate, which influences mood and thought patterns. It promotes neuroplasticity — the brain's ability to form new connections.
-
The effects of ketamine, which most patients find pleasant, last for approximately 45 minutes. These effects can make you feel “far from” your body, and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature.
How does Ketamine-Assisted Psycotherapy work?-
After deciding that you want to explore KAP, you will have a medical intake in order to be assessed and prescribed the medicine.
-
Once you’ve been approved, we will schedule time together for our KAP preparation sessions, which will be scheduled just like regular therapy sessions prior to the KAP dosing session. The intention of these sessions is to align on the process and set intentions for your KAP sessions.
-
A typical ketamine dosing session lasts 2-3 hours and can take place either in-person at my office (for the first session only), or remotely via telehealth.
For much of this session, you will be in a comfortable, reclining position wearing an eye mask and listening to calming music. While the session may be largely an internal experience, I will be present with you the entire time to hold space and provide support as needed.
It is often recommended to begin with 6 dosing session, 2 per week for 3 weeks. After this period, you can decide if you’d like to continue monthly or as-needed.
-
After our KAP dosing session, we will meet for integration therapy sessions to review the memories, thoughts & insights that arose during your dosing session, and to prepare for the next dosing session.
-
Journey Clinical’s medical team schedules regular follow ups with you to monitor outcomes and prescribe ketamine lozenge refills, as appropriate. The frequency of follow ups depends on your unique treatment plan.
